Our Dojo

Karate Seikukan FNQ serves the Far North Queensland region, including the Atherton Tablelands and Cairns. We are proudly affiliated with Seikukan Wavell Heights, and are dedicated to the practice and preservation of traditional Shotokan Karate. We welcome students of all ages and abilities, fostering a supportive community environment where individuals can build confidence, improve fitness, and learn valuable self-defence skills. Our focus is on personal growth, both on and off the dojo floor.

Our History

Seikukan was founded by Mr. Tainen Takemori, a direct student of Mr. Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern Karate-do. After graduating as a chemist, Takemori Sensei moved to Toyama and was frequently visited by Funakoshi Sensei. His martial arts journey also led him to China for seven years, where he studied under the master La Kai On, and to extensive Zen studies throughout Japan.

Takemori Sensei, a deeply creative and insightful individual, blended these three powerful influences—Karate-do, Chinese martial arts, and Zen—to form the unique foundation of Seikukan.

The name "Seikukan" translates to "Silent Sky Building" or "Training Hall Under the Clear Blue (Cloudless) Sky." This name reflects a core principle derived from Zen: the state of "Mushin," or "no-mind." In meditation, Mushin is the goal of achieving an untroubled mind, clear and vast like a cloudless sky, allowing for instinctual and immediate action. This philosophy is at the heart of our practice.
